By my troth, I am fain to recommend this highly practical book if you are looking to explore Shakespeare with primary-aged varlets. The author provides more ideas than you could shake a gudgeon at, based on four plays – The Tempest, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet. The approaches focus on bringing the stories alive through active drama, exploring the characters through improvisation and enjoying the language. Zounds! The book is packed with ideas, based on techniques that will be familiar to some teachers and most drama teachers, along with some novel approaches of the author’s, such as a Red Nose Day to introduce the concept of clowning in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. There are cross-curricular links and writing activities as well as craft activities. Don thy doublet, do not tarry, get inspired!
