Resources Reviews Teaching Mathematics Creatively by Linda Pound and Trisha Lee

teaching-mathematics-creatively

Many schools are finding it more and more difficult to engage children in mathematics. This book aims to correct that by placing a whole range of creative approaches into the hands of teachers for using maths right across the primary curriculum. Bringing maths alive through storytelling and play, learning maths outdoors, using musical rhythms and problem solving are just a few of the approaches outlined in the book. Writers Linda Pound (Early Years Consultant) and Trisha Lee (Artistic Director of MakeBelieve Arts) put their heads together to offer up a range of practical strategies and activities including mud-digging, den-building, sorting rubbish, making musical instruments and holding a birthday party for a giant. Contemporary research and theory is carefully interwoven with the practical examples, providing facts and research to assist understanding of the techniques whenever necessary.

The book has a recommended price of £19.99. It is published by Routledge and also available from Amazon.

MakeBelieve Arts have extensive experience in bringing maths alive through drama and Trisha Lee will be running a one-day course for Drama Resource focussing on Maths Through Storytelling and Drama on Tuesday 22nd November 2011. Book here.
